Galleries and museums in New York were also much more geared up for, and appreciative of, the new movements coming out at that time than most other cities across the world.

The life of Rothko in New York was consistently full of artistic influences of high quality, even after his early days of tutoring. He was later to turn to teaching himself which brought him into contact with the bright young things of that period, including the likes of Adolph Gottlieb, Barnett Newman, Joseph Solman, Louis Schanker and John Graham. At this point clearly Rothko had gone full circle turning student into teacher.

Whilst supported early in his career by his family through their relocation to the United States, Mark Rothko was later to undergo serious questioning from his family over his choice of career because of the financial pressures which later existed. As is typical of many creative people, Rothko Jnr was not interested at all in such financial worries and carried on stubbornly to support his true artistic passions.

This conflict with his family did still not entirely go away even after hosting his first exhibition entirely dedicated to his own work, a major landmark for any artist. He did see the importance himself, however, and it was the start of his rise to great prominence in the art world in the years to come.

Mark Rothko is an artist who firmly believed in producing art that was contemporary and through techniques which were as far from academic as possible. He even saw drawing as an early sign of conforming to the norm and would concentrate more on colour thab anything else. Other artists such as Matisse and Chagall have also devoted themselves to colour selection as fundamentally above all else.

Rothko carefully studied art produced by children and saw qualities in it that existed in the modern art styles that were coming out of New York at that time. The primitive style was something he liked and was inspired by. It was also poles apart from traditional teachings which he loved. This revolutionary personality existed in politics as well as just art for Rothko and he constantly distanced himself from anything that he viewed as mainstream.

One time when politics frustrated was the time at which several artists including Rothko left American Artistsâ€™ Congress to set up the Federation of Modern Painters and Sculptors whose main ambition was to develop art as they had been doing before, but without any clear affiliation to political beliefs which had started to cloud the progress of the former.

It was around this time that the artist also abbreviated his birthname to the shortened version of Rothko in order to protect his Jewish background and disguise himself from dangerous groups that were hostile to his faith at the time. Some such people even existed in the United States and this forced him to take this precautionary action.

Believing firmly in the emotions behind his work, whilst striving for innovation and creativity, Rothko became slightly unsettled by his new fame as he was not sure he was receiving the right type of success. His concerns centred around those buying his paintings and whether they sought to understand the artist's original basis of thought that surrounded each one. Many, he felt, were simply participating in the latest artistic fashion that he would never have wanted to be a part of, even if it helped him to achieve financial stability.

The artist began to be disillusioned with the fashion of his works and would choose to be more and more secluded from the artistic public and his emotions continued to change at a will. This inability to accept and appreciate popularity is very common in artists who often react differently to that of the norm, which is perhaps the secret of their success and artistic creativity.

Rothko's messages were emotional and his vehicle for them was the colour choices which were bold and highly considered. The artist was so intent on achieving perfection with colour and light in his paintings that he would be exceptionally sensitive to how each of his works was stored and displayed, regularly losing his temper spectacularly if people did not meet his requirements and expectations to the letter.
